Pavé Jewelry Design Guide: Spacing, Strength, and Sparkle

Pavé jewelry design relies on tiny stones set close together so the surface looks like continuous sparkle — which means spacing, bead size, and the metal beneath have to be modeled precisely.

Stone Spacing

Stones must sit close enough to look seamless, but with enough metal between them to hold securely. Too tight and the structure weakens, too loose and the effect disappears.

Bead Size and Placement

Small metal beads hold each stone. Their size and position are modeled per stone, which is why pavé takes more modeling time than a simple setting.

Underlying Metal Strength

Drilling seats for many stones removes metal. The band needs enough thickness underneath to stay strong after all seats are accounted for.

Stone Size Consistency

Graduated sizes (larger near the center, smaller toward the ends) create a refined look but need careful calculation so stones fit the curve.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why does pavé cost more to design?
Each stone seat and bead is modeled precisely, which adds modeling time.

  • Do pavé stones fall out easily?
Well-made pavé is secure, but heavy impact can loosen beads, so periodic checks are wise.

  • Can pavé be added to an existing design?
Yes, though the underlying structure may need thickening to support the extra seats.
